Animal Testing Policy

Elemis Ltd has always been against animal testing. Elemis has never and will never test on animals. Nor has Elemis ordered such tests by any third parties.

Elemis specialises in natural caring ingredients of the highest quality and safety. All finished products have been extensively tested over time, on our own staff, human volunteers and or by non-animal laboratory trials.

The European Cosmetic Directive banned all animal testing of finished products from September 2004 and ingredients used within products from March 2009. They enforce this directive and dictate what is safe and what’s not. Elemis strongly supports this position and will do everything possible to keep driving non-animal testing alternatives and always approach development in an ethical manner.

Q. Do we operate a fixed cut-off date for ingredients tested on animals?

A. The European Cosmetic Directive has set a fixed cut-off date of March 2009. The majority of ingredients in the marketplace launched well before this date and will have been tested on animals at some point in their lifetime, maybe decades ago. It is impossible to remove all of these products from the marketplace. Our position on this is in line with other cruelty free organisations, that we will endeavour to choose the safest, most ethical ingredients possible and help drive non-animal testing alternatives.

In relation to your comments regarding our packaging, I will ensure that they are noted and passed on to our Marketing Department for their reference.  I can assure you that we take all customer feedback extremely seriously whether it be positive or negative and do use this feedback to guide our future decisions.  Your comments are therefore appreciated.

One of the great things about Julep is we have 4 Nail Parlors and amazing customers that let us test and try products on them all the time! Some of our products do contain animal-derived ingredients (milk, beeswax, etc). Here are some products that are VEGAN: Facial for Hands Glycolic Hand Scrub, Julep Essential Cuticle Oil, and any non-red nail polish.

Another great thing about our products is that they are “4 Free”. Unlike some other nail polish brands, our formula does not contain 4 of the most harmful chemicals commonly found in nail polish. We use NO paraben, NO sulphate phthalate, NO DBP, and they are tolene and formaldehyde FREE. We like to say that we took out all of the nasty carcinogens that are found in so many other products.

Animal testing for decorative cosmetic products has been prohibited under the German Animal Welfare Act since 1986. Tests on animals for all cosmetic finished products have been banned since 1998.

A corresponding ban has been in place since March 2011 for cosmetic raw materials as well, which Misslyn expressly welcomes.

Pursuant to this legislation, raw materials developed for use in cosmetics may no longer be tested for compatibility on animals.

Raw materials developed for cosmetics before this time point were not necessarily tested on animals. However, some of them were tested using in-vivo experiments (tests on animals).

In order to conduct all future testing of raw materials exclusively by means of in-vitro tests (test tube experiments), these procedures are being continuously further developed and new methods researched.  Misslyn has no knowledge of the raw materials used in products being tested with in-vivo tests.

In order to minimize incompatibilities, Misslyn conducts internal application tests or patch tests (epicutaneous tests) used to determine the local compatibility of a product.

Does Youngblood test on animals?

No. We do not test any of our products on animals. Many of our formulations are made with plant- and vegetable-derived ingredients including numerous vegan options (see next question).
